Drawing The Line

Introducing the "Rail Blaster"

Half the experience of skating is identifying cool lines to skate. And the same is true for skating games. Skaters see the world differently. Boring concrete structures and handrails meant for safety became playgrounds of risk and creative expression. But sometimes, when skating in space, as one does, there's no rail to bridge a long perilous gap in the void. If only your cybernetic skateboard could generate a gravity defying rail on the fly...

Well, now it can! Introducing the "Rail Blaster". This rare upgrade replaces your default dash ability. Hold the trigger to blast a rail out in front of you and steer it with the right stick. You can grind anywhere as long as you have enough juice. Now you can draw your own line to fill in the gaps.

Game design discussion

Rail Blaster is the first thing built on a new special ability slot. The dash ability used to be hard-wired into the player. Now there's a special ability slot that can be swapped at runtime. This opens up a lot of fun possibilities for upgrades. What special abilities would you like to see?

Multi-Flips

Tap the flip button again (and again!) during a flip trick to repeat it. Do a kickflip and hit the flip button again while the board is still flipping, and you get a Double Kickflip. Hit it 10 times, and you get an aptly named Kickflip x10. There's no limit to how many times the board can flip (except the ground). Turn a Varial Kickflip into a 360 Flip and beyond.

Also This Month

  • Perfect and sloppy landings. A Perfect landing is worth +1000. A Sloppy one costs you 500.
  • Kissed the Rail. A short-lived grind used to be essentially worthless. Now it's worth a little something.
  • Dash aim lock. Now when aiming the dash ability, you will automatically lock and track collectables. This helps give more novice players an easier way to get hard to reach items.
  • Balancing is actually challenging now. Let's be honest, grinds and manuals haven't been that challenging in Cybordz. Now balancing much more challenging gives a reason for upgrades to improve your balance skill.
  • Free camera mode. Turn it on in Misc settings, double-tap R3 and fly the camera wherever you want. This one's for anyone making trailers or hunting screenshots, but y'all might have fun with it, too.

Let me know what special abilities you would like to see in the game!

And if you haven't already, consider scheduling a live playtest. Most of the new features/fixes this month were directly from playtesters! I'm so grateful to everyone who's helped make Cybordz a better game.

Until next time,
Robert
